LOBSTER SEASON IS HERE!
WOOHOOOO! It's Lobster season!
Quite possibly my favorite season to look forward to! Mini-season here in the sunshine state is the last Wednesday, Thursday of July with the regular season starting August 6th and ending March 31st.
Hundreds of crustacean loving South Floridians don wetsuits, rash-guards, masks and fins and jump in the water with nets, sticks and (recently for me) snares, all in the search for this ugly (hence the name bugs) but wonderfully delicious delicacy.
Last week I was invited to go out with some friends in the keys for the start of regular season and we stacked up! Getting our limit for 4 divers in a couple of hours and even having some time for a little deep dropping for vermillion snapper, porgies and a snowy grouper.
I was also able to make good on a call out from one of my closest friends, Ms. Jacey Birch of Channel 10 WPLG. Yup! She called me out on national TV to take her some lobster!
Dinner was grilled lobster tails, with sautéed asparagus and cauliflower rice. So thrilled to share my love of hunting the ocean with those closest with me.
When diving for lobster make sure you are not in a lobster sanctuary, have the proper license with you and that everyone in the water has their own personal gauge, measure all the lobster in the water to make sure they meet the 3" carapace minimum. Leave egg baring females ALONE and ALWAYS dive with a buddy for safety!! Treat the FWC with respect. After all they're protecting our fisheries for our future.
I'm sure I'll have several more lobster reports through out the season. Tight lines and enjoy the season responsibly and safely!
